The Long March

In January 1945, as the Red Army resumed its relentless advance towards Germany, the inmates of prisoner-of-war camps in Poland were marched west towards Germany. Amongst the thousands of British and Commonwealth soldiers, was my father Roy Martin Badgerow.
They were now ordered at gunpoint to march many hours a day through the snow and ice of a Polish winter. It is truely one of the forgotten realities, of the Second World War.

Dad never ever spoke of this to me.... as is the norm for those that had suffered World War Two. The silent generation..... as they come to be known.

He was a great man, I miss him dearly and wish we could talk again.
Now, when I recall his encouragement to clean my plate because people are starving in Europe,
I think I understand.
